1 FULL DAY: FULL-DAY PRIVATE TOUR TO MEKNES & VOLUBILIS TRIP FROM FES
Meknes was initially settled by the Mkanssa Tribes, known as the warriors, in the tenth century. The city gradually expanded, and in the 17th century, Moulay Ismaíl Alalaoui established it as the capital of Morocco. He built magnificent walls and gates, but the city began to decline after his death in 1727, eventually losing its status as the capital.
What to see in Meknes:
– Artisanal markets: Take a stroll through the souks to experience the city’s modern vibe.
– El-Hedim Square: Similar to Marrakech’s Jamaa el Fna Square, it’s the center of public and cultural life in Meknes.
– Bab el-Mansour Gate: Built in 1732, this gate connects the square to the old Imperial City of Moulay Ismaíl.
– Mausoleum of Moulay Ismaíl: Visit the tomb of the sultan who shaped Morocco’s history.
– Medersa Bouanania: This old Quranic school offers a unique view of the city from its top, resembling the medersas of Fez.
– Heri Souani: Explore the royal stables of Moulay Ismaíl, which could house up to 12,000 horses.
After exploring Meknes, we’ll head to Volubilis, one of the oldest cities in Morocco and a former Roman capital. The city once had a population of over 20,000, primarily dedicated to wheat cultivation under Roman rule. Volubilis later became the refuge of Idris I, who proclaimed himself as an emir and established Volubilis as the birthplace of Islam in the region.
